Techné Revenge is a self-curated fictional group exhibition that brings together ten contemporary artists working in different mediums. All are well known for their craft and ability to transcend through our technologically advanced world. This world that has become increasingly ordinary, the craftsmanship of the hand-made creations promotes a sense of organic individuality, like human beings within society. The space between letters are uneven and imperfect as natural as nature. The lines are not straight and edges fade into one another, just as the world around us. Techné Revenge showcases the resiliency of craftsmanship in our technological world.
Using the works of each artist, such as Paul Lindahl and John Downer, this book is designed in a unique way to help readers understand how hand-made creations are organic and very human. The book is divided into 6 sections, each using a different paper mediums used in the artists own craft. John Downer is known for his hand lettered signs painted on butcher paper. The section of his chapter is printed on French butcher paper. The cover of the book is de-bossed with a pattern I created with some of my favorite Downer grocery signs. The exhibit visual language is inspired by the nature of his lettering style.
There is a human, timeless element to hand-lettering. It's craft, over machine. Every day we are bombarded by the media that not only stress conformity but also deliver messages in impersonal computer generated design. The advent of modern commercial printing ushered printing uniformity. What are we to do? Plan ahead and perhaps take revenge.
